Rachel Jefferson

MA Fine Art | Class of 2020

I am an artist concerned with highlighting the importance of protecting wildlife and nature. My current work focuses on the world if we suddenly disappeared or otherwise never existed. I explore topics such as the regeneration of the earth, the healing of the sea, and the wellbeing of animals. An example of one of my paintings shows a bear thriving among an abundance of trees, with rare flowers growing.

Other paintings show how domesticated animals would cope without us, such as dogs and farm animals. My paintings show an ideal world where there is an abundance of nature, the coral reefs regrow, plastic disappears from the sea, and man-made structures collapse – replaced by foliage. My aim is to show a world in which we could live by showing it without us, and I hope that it will encourage people to aim for a more renewable future.
