Dancing Through Lockdown Dance is a huge part of Alex’s work as an artist. In this project, she explores the incredible impact that the current lockdown has had on the dance industry and how it has affected performers individually. She shows how these artists are persisting and enduring the difficulties of dancing at home, as well as the different ways it can hinder their training. Government restrictions have halted in-person dance classes, which are a vital part of training to uphold skills and movement. In addition, the current lack of access to studios has prevented dancers from being able to be perform to their potential. Despite the setbacks they face, they continue to work hard from their homes and grow by taking every opportunity they can online. They won’t give up.
Still Standing Confronts the gender discrimination in dance and more directly the opinion that boys shouldn’t dance. Dance is a field that Alex is very confident in and has a great deal of experience and passion for. Using a broken down pier as a metaphor she created a video that focuses on the movement of the dancer as he dances to the sound of the ocean.
Widows Widows addresses the idea of loss and how individuals cope with bereavement. Alex contacted some ladies that went through this difficult time and created relationships with them as she took their portraits. It was a sensitive topic that she enjoyed working in and hopes to do further work in this field in her future.
