Jo Liddle

MA Fine Art | Class of 2020

My practice is based on personal narrative and history, loss and memory; exploring the ephemerality of time passing and the trace, if any, that we leave behind.

Experiences and memories are layered and lost over time; fleeting and difficult to grasp. I use the physical materiality of oil paint or transparent digital images and sounds to build up a layered surface, removing and rubbing back to reveal an image or sound; a memory. The surface itself becomes a palimpsest, holding a trace of the past and reflecting the process of memory retrieval and for the viewer, evoking an almost physical sensation of the passing of time. In all my work there is a tension between the seen and the unseen, or almost seen; the images and colour palette being carefully balanced to create a sense of the unfinished and incomplete.
