Foundation Diploma in Art, Design and Media Practice | Class of 2020
This project began as an exploration into various forms of communication, especially those we think unknown civilisations would understand or decode. This included morse code, sign language, infographics and the Voyager Golden Record: a documentation of humanity on the Voyager spacecraft, searching for life outside our solar system.
During lockdown, I went on walks and photographed the signs of lockdown local to me, developing them into line drawings, and colouring them using a colour palette inspired by vintage travel posters.
I decided they would be postcards destined for Voyager, similarly isolated (but in space). Staying true to postcard designs, I added slogans – made from opening lines of emails I received during lockdown. Some seemed insensitive and too formal; others just ironic. I lettered them on each design and printed all seven postcards, adding each design’s title on the reverse in morse code as a nod to my project’s origins.
