(Un)natural colours of the Blast Beach

Inspired by the ‘Fashioned from Nature’ exhibition at the V&A, I have explored natural processes within textiles, such as printing and creating pattern. I started experimenting with natural dyes using ingredients such as onions, turmeric, tea and avocado and used them to make tie dye patterns.

Inspired by Andy Goldsworthy’s work, I visited the Blast Beach in Seaham to collect imagery and noticed parallels between the colours created by the natural dyes and the colours of the post-industrial landscape. I decided to explore this connection and therefore researched Anthony Burril’s ‘Oil and Water Do Not Mix’, utilising screen print to experiment with the dyes I created.

My work consists of a series of screen prints using photographic imagery, a mix of natural dyes and screen print inks and found objects I collected from the beach. In the future I would like to increase the scale of my work and consider further approaches to installation.
